    Toys and Pastimes.
    When boys have nothing to do they make boortree guns. They cut a piece of a boortree stick about six inches long. There is a hole in the centre of it and they make the hole longer with a hot iron. Then they get a thin piece of a board and cut it till it will go through the hole. They leave a head on it. This is called a ramrod. Then they sharpen one end of the gun with a knife. They get a slice of a turnip then and squeeze the sharp end of the gun down on it. In this way they make a plug for the gun. They push this one out with the ramrod and cut another. They let it stay in. Then they blow into the gun and squeeze in the other plug at the other end. Then they put in the ramrod and give it a quick push. It pushes up the plug and the wind inside shoots out the other plug and sends it a good distance. If they have another piece of boortree with a hole in it they can make another gun. They can cut
