The people long ago sometimes thatched their own houses with rushes, flax and straw. Before the flax was ready for using it had to be pulled and tied into leats first, and then it had to be put into a dam of water for about a fortnight so that all the boughs would fall off. Then the flax was taken out and spread in a field to dry. When it was nice and dry it was lifted and tied into leats again. Then it was put into a big house ready for using. Before the straw was ready for using it had to be thrashed with two sticks which they called a flail, because there were no mills in those days.
