- The churches began to be built after the arrival of St. Patrick. They were generally made of wood but after by stone. For many centuries they continued to be built very small, and many of these were erected in 24 hours, as christanity was spreading rapidly throughout the country. In the 12th century large and splendid churches began to be erected. The ruins of these simple little churches of the early centuries and of the grand monasteries of the 12th and subsequent centuries are still to be seen all over the country. The smallest of these churches still in use is St. Kevins in Co. Galway. It is the smallest church in the world.
