- All women long ago wore white caps. Thery were made of cambric and were square in front and round at the back like a sun bonnet. There were borders on the caps. A young women has less borders on her cap than an old woman. Some old women had three rows of borders right over the top of her head. The caps were washed and starched and the fluting were smoothed by a tallying iron which was about the thickness of a lead pencil. It was heated and put into each little fluting. This made the fluting stand on end. Old women were very proud of their caps.
