  1. There are potatoes grown on our farm at home. There are two acres grown each year. My father ploughs the ground first, then he harrows it several times to make the soil fine. In this district the potatoes are sown in drills Wood ploughs were used but there are none of them left. The spades are not made locally they are bought in the shop. This is what the local spade is like (see margin). When the potatoes are three weeks sown they are sunk. In two weeks time or when the potatoes are about two inches high they are moulded, then they get a second moulding in two or three weeks time, this is done to keep down the weeds. The potatoes are dug in October, sometimes by men and spades, at other times by a potato digger, the differ is speedier than the spades. The potatoes are all stored in pits except some for early use which are put in the potato house. Aran Victors, Aran Banners, Kerr's Pinks suit this district best.
