- Houses in former times were built of stone and mortar. Some of the houses were thatched, and other houses were slated. The houses were thatched with straw and rushes. The houses had a bed in the back of the kitchen. It was called a settle-bed. It was used for a seat in the day-time. The fireplace was in the gable wall. The front of the chimney was made of stone and mortar. There were some half-doors in the district. They were used for keeping the small children in the house, when the people of the house did not want them to go out. Turf and sticks were used for the fire. Candles and splits of fir were used for giving light. Some of the floors were made of clay, and other floors were made of flags.
