- The Potato Crop.
Potatoes are grown on my farm. There is about two acres sown under potatoes each year. In a dry warm year the crop is more plentiful than in a damp, cold year. The ground is prepared by the farmers and his sons. In late Autumn the ground is manured with farm yard manure and sea-weed. The potatoes are sown in drills except in very sandy ground when they are sown in ridges. Drills are made by spades about three feet broad. A plough is nearly always used. Wooden ploughs were used about sixty years ago, but few remain. Spades are not made locally but are bought in a shop. Potatoes are sometimes left to bud in a box in a dark place in the house before cutting. A bud or eye is left in every cutting The people sometimes help one another. Before the potato comes through, the drills are raked or harrowed with sadde harrows. They are then made up.
