    and the goblet and appeared before the king. The twelve princesses placed themselves behind the door to listen. The king asked the questions, "Where have my daughters worn their shoes?" "By dancing with twelve princes in a castle," replied the soldier. The soldier then described all that he had seen.
    On hearing this the king sent for his daughters and asked them if what was said was true and they said it was. The king then asked the soldier which of them he would have for a wife and he replied, "I am no longer young so give me the eldest." On that day the marriage was celebrated and the kingdom was promised to the soldier after the king's death.
