- The Claddagh fishing village is situated to the west of Galway overlooking Galway Bay. The history of this village may be traced back for centuries. It is only in recent years that the Claddagh people practised the habits and dress of the people living outside their own circle.
They were always a very aloof class of people. It was not about fifty years ago that marriages between Claddagh people and people outside that community began to take place. They had their own code of laws and their own King. To this man all disputes were taken and his rule was accepted loyally by them. The Claddagh people were very superstitious. It has been known that those fishermen would return home should they meet a red haired woman.- Bailitheoir
