In the year 1855 the first school house was built in Leitrim. Father Griffin that got it built. Mr. Kellegher was the teacher. He used to stay at Mc. Donagh's in Duniry.
Slates they used as copies and they had slate-pencils for writing with. The teacher used to give out sums like Dictation. They read a good deal of English books.
In the year 1878 they learned the first Irish. They had a different method of speaking it than they have now. It is said that it was better Irish also. They never used to write any.
