To the North of the town there is the Carmelite Church and Monastery built in 1776, the old ruins near by date back to 1300 and tell the tale of other days. Some few yards from this there is the Carmelite Convent and Chapel built in 1831. To the East of the town is situated the Convent of Mercy with its Chapel of a later date 1854.Thus we see that Loughrea of the Foamy Lake has much to say about its vanished glories.
