    It was believed to be unlucky to drive a beast with a holly stick unless the end of it was burned in the fire.
    A horse shoe was thought to be very lucky. Some people used to hang them up in their houses.
    It was not lucky to put the first child who was born in a house in a cradle that was not used before.
    When going to a fair or market it was thought very unlucky to meet a red-haired woman and her barefooted.
