  1. Old Houses.
Long ago there existed in this district a lot of old houses. They were generally thatched; HWenever there were rushes to be got. They got them and thatched ther houses or some times with a straw.
They had a bed as a rule in the kitchen in one of the corners nearest of the fire it was called a "pouch". The fireplace was generally in the gable wall. The floors were always clay with a few flags through it one at the fire one at the dresser and one or two in the middle of the florr. There are still clay floors in some of the country houses yet. Half doors were commom in those days they are atill common in those days they are still common yet. Where ever there is a young child starting to walk there is generally a half door, to keep them in off the street.
There was one room and a kitchen in the old houses. They made candles out of rushes called runshlights and kept them lit at night .
