The cake was made of oaten meal and it was placed against a griddle in front of the fire. The only meat that was eaten in olden times was veal it was the flesh of young calves. No one reared bull calves at that time; the were sold to a butcher for a few shillings. He killed it and sold it to the people. Slat herrings were the only fish eaten by the country people. Turnips and cabbages were the only vegetables in olden times.
