   was mined in Slieve - an -Iarainn and carried down to the furnace on the backs of mules and donkeys, their bring no carts or lorries then. Sam Taylor heard from his father that one man who lived on the mountain, kept sixty asses for carrying the ore to the furnace.
   The furnace fires were kept lighted by a large bellows, driven by water power. the water flowed on to a wooden wheel which was connected by an iron shaft to the bellows. The supply of water came from Roscunish lake and flowed as now, to the ballalley and passed on where the Carrick road now runs. It then crossed into Miss McManus' meadow and across beside the canal and out on the west side of the Furnace hill. When it passed over the wheel to entered Lough Allen and the channel can still be seen where it entered the lake.
