- My father told me that over a century ago and even later days every one made his own candles.There were three kinds of candles - rush candles, rezin candles, and candles made by dipping in fat.To make rezin candles the person got rezin from the deal tree and boiled it in what they called grizettes. Then they got a string and put the rezin round it and left it there to set and then the candles were fit for use. The way they made the rush candles was to cut rushes and peel them all to a little strip on one side and then roll in warm fat or oil and leave them lying in a cool place until they set. Then they got a rod and split it. Then let a candle slip into the split and lift it up as needed.Another way candles were made was to get a pot of warm fat and to cut cords about six inches long.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
