- The famine lasted one year from 1846 to 1847. The potato crop which failed in 1846 was the chief food of the Irish. Thousands of pounds worth of potatoes rotted in the ground and cause a terrible smell through the air which caused fever. During that year thousands of people died of hunger and starvation. During the famine many poor people were put out of their houses to die because they were not able to pay rent. Often people were got dead along the road with lines of green around their mouths where they used to be eating grass and chicken weed.
