- The fifth of January is known as the Twelfth Night. Twelve rush candles are lit on this night.
The rushes are cut on the day before. They are left on the hob to dry and when they are dry they are peeled. One little bit of the rush is left on each without peeling for support. These rushes are then dipped in grease and dried. "Cow-dung" is then got and made into the shape of a cake.
The candles are then stuck in this "cake" from "cow-dung" and ashes mixed.
Then the candles are lit. Each candle is named after some member of the family or relation.
The first candle to burn it is said that the person after whom it is named will die first. If a lot of grease comes out of the candle it is said that the person after whom it(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
