  1. A family of the McKeon's were some time after the plantation of Ulster transferred from County Derry to Leitrim and received large grants of land in Kiltoghert.

    Three important facts emerge from this transference
    (1) This family must have done an act which won favour with the English Government
    (2) It must have been an important deed since the grants were large.
    (3) They were known locally as "Kanes," "Keons" or "McKeons".
    The Irish name is O'Catháin. We known that the Irish family or clan that encompassed the ruin of the great Hugh O'Neill was the O'Catháins of Derry. It is within the region of probability that this was the very family. If not the coincidences are remarkable. The head of this family
