- Marriages used to take place more frequently during Shrove than at any other time but in later years, marriages have been very few in this area. Matches have been very few in this area. Matches are still made in this district and a dowry is given by never any goods or stock. No marriages every took place in houses around here. The custom on the wedding-day after the happy couple got married was to have usually twenty or thirty jaunting cars and to go for a drive which was called the “Dragging Home”. Several men on horseback would gallop from where the pair were married to the brides house and the first man to arrive there would be presented with a bottle of whiskey. That night all the young men of the locality would dress up in straw and attend the wedding. This party would consist of a baptain, two lieutenants and some others lower in rank, together with the main body of followers.
