- MArriages occur most frequently in my district during the period immediately before Lent. This period is called Suraft. Shrove Tuesday is the last day of Suraft and any of the marriageable boys and girls of the district, who are not married on or before that day are "salted" so that they will "keep" for another year. They Sunday after, which is the first Sunday in Lent was called "Domnach a'Smirach" beacuse the marriageable girls who did not get married during Suraft were supposed to be vexed on account of it.
The month of May is considered an unlucky time for marriage as also are Thursday, Friday and Saturday of the week. The old rhyme says.
Monday for health.
Tuesday for wealth,
Wednesday the best day of all.
Thursday for crosses,
Friday for losses and
Saturday no day at all.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
