- Long ago the people made all the work in wood themselves. In every district there were one or two coopers as they were called. They made churns, firkins, tubs, and piggons,The cooper who worked in my district was Pat Corcoran or my Grand Uncle. He made the churns from oak and cut the oak into staves then dressed them and put them standing in tress hoops. When he had them standing in tresshoops he left them on a solid block of timber then put a fire of chip into it to press it together and put it into a shape. He tipped the tress hoops to close it and prevent it from leaking. He dressed every stave separately on a wooden mare. He would sit on the mare and leave his foot on a lever and dress his staves with a drawen knife He cut a chime in the bottom of the churn with a chime cutter and took the measurements(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
