- Marriage Customs
Long ago marriages were very big. Sometimes there were over one hundred people at a marriage. The way people went to get married long ago was on horseback. In the morning the bride would go with her brother or if she had no brother she would go with a cousin or a near friend on horse-back and the bride and groom would meet at the church. The groom would also be on horse-back. Then after they would be married they would go to the nearest town and they would have the arrangements made to be home about four o'clock.
They would spend the day in a public house drinking and dancing and making merry. The horses would be put (be put) in the stables till evening. Then they would be taken out and a man and woman would mount on every horse.
The bride and groom would be first and they would go at a nice trot until they come within a mile or two of the bride's lane. Then the women would dismount and the men would breathe their horses for a few moments(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
