   wall a stout wooden beam was placed having one end inserted in the back wall and one in the front wall. On top of this was placed an erection formed like three sides of a pyramid, and made of plaited willow or of wood, the open ends of which were placed against the wall. This was the flue. At one side of this underneath there was built up a wall thus enclosing the hearth at one side and making a hall entrance to the bedroom. Beside that wall was generally placed a suístín a circular seat about fourteen inches high, made all together of woven sugán rope. On this seat generally sat the old woman of the house. A kind of little loft was made on the cross beam between the flue and the wall of the house. A variety of stuff was kept here. Hanging on some part of the hearth wall was usually a bag of salt on a peg.

   At night the ashes and fire were raked out, the red coals replaced some inches apart and covered with ashes to provide kindling for the morning fire, and to prevent the 'good people' from taking some kind of revenge.

   A settlebed a combination of bed and couch ran along the back wall of the house.

   In some houses a press behind the door and a dresser with a space between the two helped
