   When roofing a house the principle side beams Taoibeáin with their connecting stick Cúpla were laid on the wall. Next smaller laths connected these. On these latter the Scrathacha were laid. Then the thatcher began his work. For the better class house wheaten straw was used. It was laid on in 'courses'. The average number of courses completed in a day was four. The straw was sometimes laid on one foot thick. Then the thatcher used a broad blade something like a scythe blade to cut off and point the ends of the straw. An extra ridge extending some inches from the eave on each side was often nicely ornamented by cutting and by a special method of placing the scallops.

   Inside, the roof was finished by a series of straw mats pleated nicely at top and bottom, each mat extended from Taoibheán to Taoibheán, and the mats were laid on one above the other up to the eave, thus hiding the Scrathacha.

   It was possible to do similar thatching with oaten, rye or barley straw. Wheaten straw was best, barley worst.

   Poor people who could not afford to get a proper thatcher just laid the straw on the roof without scallops, then ran Sugáin across the roof, weighting the sugan at the edge of the thatch back and front
