    then lay in wait for the return of the marauders. As soon as these latter appeared driving a herd of cattle, a battle royal began but the Waterford men having their means of escape cut off were defeated and many of their number slain. This ended the cattle raids but monuments of these grim days are still with us in the form of groups of homesteads huddled too closely together.
    Some of these villages contain as many as twenty families and were even more populous in former times as the derelict houses in many places testify.
