- About a hundred years tobacco was grown in Kilmacar and surrounding district. The people saved and cured the leaves themselves and smoked nothing but their own tobacco. Then the government forbad the growing of tobacco as they got no tax from it. The people wer compelled to cease growing the plant and any surplus leaf they had left over from the previous year they were compelled to destroy. It was at the crossroads at Kilmacar that all the tobacco leaves were collected by the Government agents in the locality was pubicly burned that was nearly a hundred years ago.
