John Keegan in summer 1832 went on pilgrimage from Gurtnacle (his native district) with a number of his neighbours to St John's well near Kilkenny - a journey of over twenty miles. Being then only a boy in his teen, he was much interested in the "dark people" cripples etc who attended there that day with the hope of being cured.
