    The Local Patron Saint.
St Brigid is connected with this district. The ruins her church is still visible. Saint Brigid's well is still in use. One day as Saint Brigid was making her well, some of schoolboys came and stole her ass, Saint Brigid wont out to look for the ass. She found him stuck to a rock in Cashelmine. So the track of his hooves are still to be seen in the rock. "St Brigid was often called Mary of the Gael. This townland is called after Saint Brigid. There are a good many people called after Saint Brigid Namely Brigid Carely, Brigid Fannon Brigid Jordan and Brigid Hunt. There is a Ballad made up about St Brigid's ass and Backward Ballinderry. Which I am now about to tell.
Twas hard to say that I could pass
When that Saint did never carry
    That good Saint Brigid's ass
    Was killed in Ballinderry
    I never injured any man
    The value of a cherry
Yet basely murdered here I am
    In Backward Ballinderry
I left the hounds some miles
    Behind me
