- Food of the people long ago.(a) Long ago the people used have three meals a day. They would always have a day's work done before breakfast. Their breakfast consisted of milk and cake only on churning days did they have butter.
For their dinner they had potatoes, home cured fish and skimmed milk. For a change sometimes they had triapán instead of fish.
Their Sunday's treat was pig's cheek and cabbage. The supper and tea were all one in those days. At this meal they used have yellow meal stirabout with plenty milk. The cakes were made with oneway and sometimes with meal. The oneway cake was called "baróid". There was another cake which was called a "bucaidín". On St. Patrick's Day and Easter Sunday a pot of eggs was boiled. On Good Friday it was the custom to have limpids for dinner.(b) At one time potatoes were a luxury here. The staple food being yellow meal and sour milk. Limpids, slabhacán, triapán, maidheabhán and cockles were used with potatoes for dinner.
