- Old Houses.
In olden times the houses were very low and small.
They were all thatched and the walls were very thick, some of them being four to five feet thick.
The fire was made on the floor and some houses had no chimney. Those that had chimneys were made of rods or wattles.
Windows were very few and very small. Some houses had none. At that time there was a tax on glass which made it very dear.
The (fires) floors were made of clay. Half doors were very common.
