- The people long ago were very poor. They ate little bread, and drank little tea. The people long ago were very healthy and strong. The old people tell us several of those stories now, and some of them are very interesting.
Sometimes the father and mother had tea in the room together, and the children had potatoes in the kitchen. Tea was very scarce at that time, and the people bought it in ounces.
In olden days the people did a lot of work before the breakfast. They went to the strand gathering weeds. They left the house about five o'clock and they were home for breakfast. They had potatoes and buttermilk for the breakfast and sometimes porridge made from oaten-meal. They had no sweet milk, because they kept it to make butter to pay the rent to the landlords.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
