In olden times churning was done with a churn called and upright churn. This churn was like the churn used at present for carrying milk to creameries. It was wide at the bottom and narrow at the top. There was a cover at the top having a hole in the centre. Through this hole a stick was pushed. To the bottom of the stick a flat piece of timber was attached. This stick was moved forwards, and downwards; sometimes it was given a rolling motion. This stick was called a dish. The churn that was invented after the dash churn, was called the firedbarrel churn. This churn had heaters in the inside(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
