- The farmers in the neighbourhood of my house have much land planted under potatoes each year, as they say they would yield more profit than most other crops. Sometimes the amount varies as to what the farmer thinks the price of the potatoes will go at the markets the following year.
At first the ground is prepared by the farmer and his workmen. At first manure is spread. In former times most potatoes were sown in ridges but now except in a small plot they are mostly sown in drills. When the drills are opened manure is spread, then the "sceulans" are planted about nine inches apart. They are later covered over by means of the plough. Ridges are made with a spade and the holes for to plant the "sceulans" are dug with the spade. Afterwards the holes are pounded by means of a "pounder". While the ground is being prepared the women are busily engaged cutting(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
