Thousands of people died of famine-fever and ship-fever, and their bodies were thrown over-board. So many died in this way that these emigrant ships in those years came to be known as coffin-ships. The bones of the poor Irish who died on ship-board whiten to this present day the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean all the way from Ireland to America.
