- Old CustomsMrs Brigid Sheehan aged 86 of Knocknagree Co. Cork gave me an extremely good account of the customs prevailing in her young days with regard to Marriage and Christenings.
There were several men in her district who acted as match-makers but Dómhnaillín Dubh the fiddler was the most noted. He was sent by the man who knew the girl and who had set his heart on marrying her if she and her father would agree. Dómhnaillín would give a full account of the man’s possessions to the girl’s people and if there was nothing against the man or his people before him the girl’s people would agree to meet the others. Dómhnaillín returned with the glad news and the parties met at a Publichouse. The fortune was fixed and if the man’s father or mother or both were alive provision was made for them. They were to have their own room and if necessary a door was to be broken out – that wasn’t very hard because in nearly all the old houses doors had been broken out for those old people’s father and mother before them and when they died the door was closed up so that(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
