   all the newly acquired bed-clothes were viewed. In Biddy’s case the Knocknagree neighbours were very interested because this fine supply of home made and home-grown materials gave them a rare opportunity of judging the women folk of Co Kerry. The wool and linen were closely examined and the texture noted - the spinning got special examination as also did the quilting - the weaver’s work was easily recognised. After these formalities the young housewife was firmly installed and Biddy couldn’t think of any more to tell me about her at this stage.

   As the first year of married life drew to a close the young wife was soon to be a young mother and during her pregnancy she had to exercise great care and obey certain fixed laws and customs. Here are some of them
   1 She hoped that her first-born would be a son to please the father - for the men were always queer
