- In this parish there are three forges. Neither of the smiths is descended from smiths, but served their apprenticeship. The forge in Clonbanin was owned by a Mr Ben Leader of Stakehill. The smith got the for forge and house rent free but was obliged to do the landlord’s work when required before any other work. Even if he was partly finished the work of shoeing for another he had to discontinue and do Leader’s work. This no longer holds because the smith has bought both house and forge. This forge is at the cross of four roads. In olden times the wheel banding was done by the side of a stream a little distance away. Now it is done outside the forge and water is kept in a cement trough built one level with the ground. Near Derinagnee Bridge there was a big flag of red shale with a hole cut out of the middle for hammering the bands on it, so there was a forge there in olden times. The smith you owned Clonbanin forge was Pat Sullivan(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
