   Local Place Names.

   With regard to names of places in the locality, especially fields large numbers are applied, owing to some peculiarity or some uncommon feature which the place has. For instance names are given to places on account of the soil, or the appearance, or the shape. Most of the names of townlands, hills, parishes and villages in the locality are contractions of the old Irish names. Names of fields are generally in English, but quite a few also have Irish forms.

   Anne Sprida well. Between Shanagolden and Ballyhahill there is a well called Ann Sprida well (or in Irish Ans-Sprid) and this is said to have got its name from a ghost or evil spirit seen there in olden times. The spirit attacked anybody that came to the well for water.

   Padock: Near my house is a field called Padock and it got its name form the fact that in olden times.
