    My father told me that long ago, before candles were ever bought, the people made them at home for their own use. First of all they would kill a cow,and take the tallow as they called it out of her.
    Next they got something round like a candlestick, but deeper and they used to melt the tallow in it. One person would hold a cord in the centre to form a wick, whilst the other poured in the tallow. Then it was left there for a time to harden and taken out ready for use.
