The sparks of fire which fly from the anvil were a help to draw a bad tooth.
The person would stand in front of the anvil and the sparks would go to his mouth and they were supposed to loosen the tooth.
If a person suffering from a tooth ache heard of a blacksmith being able to loosen a tooth he would travel miles to get the blacksmith to draw it for him.
The plan was the smith would tie the string around the tooth and in a hurry would tie the string to the anvil as if he forgot something.
