Moll Shaughnessy on the road, but he had no knowledge of who she was. He asked her to sit up,and so she did, but the minute she got on the car, the horse stopped up and refused to pull. The man struck the horse, and the horse began frothing. "Leave that horse alone", says the woman to the man, "Don't you know he couldn't pull me". "Do you see that fist", says she. "That fist is ten ton (s in weight). It killed my father and mother". Go away now on your journey and 'tis well (for you) that you gave me that lift. if you didn't i'd kill you. But you'll have to meet me on such a night and you'll have to fight me". Well an good, he went on his way, an' everything was alright.
He went to the forge, and got a sock of a plough (with which) to fight her. The time appointed he had to be there. He made a ring of Holy water around him. She came at him and every time he used to draw on her, she used make a drive to catch the sock and try to pull him outside the Holy water to kill him. They fought for three hours until the cocks crew, and then she went away roaring in flashes of fire. He saw no more of her.

Note. Moll Shaughnessy was the evil spirit of Bearna. Which is about midway between Abbeyfeale and Newcastlewest.
