  1. The custom of making toys at home is no longer a necessity since they can be bought in shops for a few pence. In the country children still make some toys but the practice is gradually dying out. Most of the toys now come from "Woolworths'."
It is only about ten or fifteen years ago that the following toys were all made in the home.
    Girls Toys
    1. Dolls. Every girl knew how to make a rag doll. The rag body was stuffed with hay or cloths. The face was painted and "hair" sewn on (often a piece of cloth with threads teased out) Sometimes a broken rubber ball was used for the head and face. The local dress maker supplied the rags for clothes which were cut out and sewn by the children-these invariably proved too large or too small for the model but eventually the doll was dressed, put in a chocolate box (with hood up) covered with multicoloured rags and "strealed" along the road. I think this afforded more enjoyment than the toys now purchased for sixpence.
