The sickness which came with the famine was the cause of most of the deaths. It was so dreaded that even brothers and sisters would not go near a dead father or mother to bury them. When a member of a family got this disease the other members of the family fed him or her at the end of a long pole. Sometimes whole families died together but it has been said that there was always one member of the family spared to tend the others while sick.
