1. Famine Times (ar lean)

   so hungry that they ate grass by the roadside, and were often seen lying dead in the ditches with the green juice of the grass coming out of their mouths.
   The sickness which came with the famine was the cause of most of the deaths. It was so dreaded that even brothers and sisters would not go near a dead father or mother to bury them. When a member of a family got this disease the other members of the family fed him or her at the end of a long pole. Sometimes whole families died together but it has been said that there was always one member of the family spared to tend the others while sick.
   Wages at the time of the famine were very small. A working man got only four pence a day and
