- There is no story I know connected with our district during the Penal times. I heard some priests were put in spike-barrels,taken away in ships and thrown into the sea during those Penal days. Other priests were put in spike-barrels, taken up to the top of a mountain, and rolled down. They suffered all this for their religion.
There is a Mass-Path from our house to Darver, because in those days the people could not go the public road for fear the bad people would kill them.
There is no place pointed out where Mass was said only in the next Parish to us. Dunmahon castle where a great slaughter took place during those days, all because of a girl who told an English Officer when the priest offered up the Mass in the castle. He promised he would marry her if she told him. Like a fool she did, and gave him the keys of the gate.
