- Old Houses
There were not many old houses in this district in olden times. There are three old houses in this district now.
In olden times most of the houses were thatched but now most of the houses are slated and tiled, but still some houses are thatched.
The thatch was got from the produce of the farm such as barley straw, wheaten straw, and oaten straw.
In some places the front of the chimney was built from clay and wattle and in other places the chimneys were built from stone and mortar.
The settle bed was placed against the back wall.
Long ago there was no glass in the windows but they used iron bars instead.
The floors long ago in the kitchen were made of clay and the room floors were made of cement.
In olden times people made candles from rushes and grease.
