At last the hare
bolted through a blind window in the hut and foiled the hounds, but not before the collie who was now playing the part of field umpire left the track of his teeth in her haunches.
Bursting in the door the farmer found not indeed the hare, but he old Caillach prostrate on the heap of old rags, and bleeding to death. The entry of the hounds - for they were the spell of the good hag - hastened the affair, and the people her old bones into the river to be carried away to sea.
