“Well! a ghrá. I don't think you will collect much folklore around this place...”
Well! agrá I don't think you will collect much folklore around this place where neighbours were continually coming and going according as they were getting employment. However I will try to recall some incidents of note.
Long ago this lane was lined with houses on both sides and in every house there was a weaving loom. In some houses there were two or three. One three roomed house occupied by people named Fagan at the top of the lane used to employ a journeyman weaver in the busy times The wages consisted of food and board and eight pence a day. There were crooners in those days as well as now. One weavers song was "Higglety Hagglety out again Saturday" sung in unison to Threadle and shuttle Another crooner sang according to the amount of diet he got. His song went something like this " A whole herrin' a whole herrin' sung in slow motion At length Mrs Fagan noticed how slow the work was going on increased his rations and the song immediately changed to "A herrin' and a half" a herrin' and a half in a livelier tune and the result was a big improvement.
