Landlords had power over their tenants - no one could cut trees or rise sand or quarry stones on their farm without leave from the landlord. They had the game of the land also.
Everyone under him had to pay rent and if they liked they could bring the ¼ of it in turf to him.
The people resented for having to pay the rent. In Derrylangon a man named Owen Smith was evicted for fighting not to pay the rent to the landlord.
