- It is said that Saint Colmcille was trying to steal the cross of Kells, and that as he was crossing St Kieran's river St Kieran met him. St Colmcille let the Cross fall and broke the top of it. The top of the Cross is seen in the river yet where he let it fall.

- The Cross of Kells is said to have been erected in the year 641. It fell a few years later and got broken. It was lying in the square of Kells for many years. One day a man named Stansy Winser was passing through the town. when he saw the state of the Cross he, got it re-erected. A man named James O'Ferrall erected the steps about the Cross. His name is to be seen on the Cross.
